Saffron

[ see picture ]
(Pronounce in Mandarin Pinyin: Fan Hong Hua)
Latin Name: Crocus sativus L
Saffron refers to the red and orange threads come from the centre of crocus plant. Weight for weight saffron is more costly than gold, but is sold in such tiny quantities that it becomes affordable. It is thought to increase appetite and ease digestion as well as help deal with stress and is even though to act as mild sedative. There is another product which is sometimes sold as "saffron," which is not from the saffron crocus at all, but from the safflower and the taste is completely different.
