Common Cold:

Here are a selection of recipes for treating common cold. In traditional Chinese medicine, common cold can be divided into two types, hot-wind and cold-wind, which should be treated with different medicinal foods.

a) Hot-wind type symptoms():
Manifestations are high fever, no chilliness, slight sweating, red eyes, sore throat, headache, slightly yellow coated tongue and rapid pulse.

b) Cold-wind type symptoms():
Manifestations are fever, chillness without perspiration, headache, pains over whole body, stuffy nose, runny nose, white coated tongue, midly quick pulse.

Hot Wind Type: Woad Roots With Radish Juice
Cold Wind Type: Ginger Lotus Root Juice
Ginger Decoction
Internal - Hot Wind Type
1) Woad Roots with radish Juice
Serving Size: 1 Person
Ingredients : a) 9g Woad Roots () BanLanGen
    b) 6g Selfheal Spike () XiaKuCao
    c) 50g White Raddish () BaiLuoBo
    d) 1 Orange () Cheng
    e) Some Honey () Feng Mi
       
Method : 1) Rinse woad roots and selfheal spike.
    2) Pour woad roots and selfheal spike into a pot with 500ml of water and cook for 10 minutes.
    3) Strain and chill. Set aside.
    4) Rinse Radish and cut into small cubes. Squeeze orange to juice.
    5) Put the radish cubes, chilled tonic, orange juice into the blender with 500ml of water and blend well.
    6) Strain and add some honey to taste before serving.

Benefits:
Suitable for people suffering from colds due to heatiness. It also helps to pacify feverish temperatures and swollen throats. In TCM, woad root acts as a natural antibiotic.

Notes:
a) Drink this immediately if there are signs of slightly fever and aching bones as it posseses a cool nature, people suffering long-term diarrhea ought not consume.

b) Treatment: Drink about 500-800ml daily for 3 days.

c) You can get the woad roots and selfheal spike at any traditional Chinese medicine's stores.

Internal - Cold Wind Type
1) Ginger Lotus Root Juice
Serving Size: 1 Person
Ingredients : a) 2 tbsp Ginger Juice ()JiangZhi
    b) 2 tbsp Honey ()FengMi
    c) 70g Lotus Root ()LianOu
    d) 2 tsp Lemon Juice ()NingMengZhi
       
Method : 1) Rinse and peel lotus root then blend to juice.
    2) Combine well with the rest ingredients and 1/2 cup of warm water before serving.
Benefits:
Lotus roots are good for treating sore throat and protects vocal cords due to cold problem whereas ginger juice helps to sweat and expels coldness. It is commonly used for treating cold and fever in early stage.
 
 
3) Ginger Decoction
Serving Size: 1 Person
Ingredients : a) 25g Ginger () Jiang
    b) 25g brown sugar () HongTang
       
Method : 1) Cleaned and sliced ginger, then put into a bowl. Add boiling water and cover for 5-10 minutes.
    2) Add in brown sugar. Drink the decoction while hot, then cover up well, sleep and start to sweat.
Benefits:
Ginger helps to sweat and expels coldness. It is commonly used for treating cold and fever in early stage.
